CASTROVILLE, Monterey County — October 26, 2026. Motorists approaching the interchange of highways 156 and 183 should expect a change in traffic patterns on Tuesday, October 27. Caltrans District 5 has scheduled alternating, one-way traffic control in both directions near the interchange from 9 a.m. until 3 p.m. as utility workers prepare the site for planned construction.

The agency says crews are preparing for a future bridge overcrossing and roundabouts. The work is preparatory; Caltrans has not announced that the new bridge or roundabouts are opening now. Directional signs will guide drivers through the controlled section. Delays of up to 10 minutes are possible, and the work is expected to finish by Wednesday, October 28.

What drivers should know

Castroville connects local agricultural and residential traffic with routes across northern Monterey County. Drivers making time-sensitive trips should allow extra time and avoid assuming both directions will move continuously through the interchange during the work period. This announcement describes temporary traffic management, not a permanent route change.

Check Caltrans QuickMap before traveling because construction timing can change. Official source: Caltrans District 5 notice of October 26. Monterey County coverage is part of California58’s county newspaper network.
